Porcelain veneers are a popular solution for addressing minor aesthetic flaws in your pearly whites. These thin shells are bonded to the front of your teeth to hide imperfections and provide additional support and protection. They are resistant to staining, chipping, and other damage, and with the right care can last a lifetime. It’s easy to assume that because they’re so strong they protect your teeth from everything, including cavities. Unfortunately, this isn’t entirely true! Keep reading to learn more about whether you can get cavities with veneers!
Can Porcelain Veneers Get Cavities?
Porcelain veneers are made from a resilient ceramic material that’s finished with a durable glaze that gives them their strength. The outer layers function like a sealant and help resist breaking, discoloration, and yes, even bacteria. That means the veneers themselves won’t get cavities.
These protective covers only shield the front of your teeth, though. They don’t protect the back, sides, or roots of your pearly whites. That means that while it’s true your veneers cannot get cavities, your natural teeth can. Germs can penetrate around and underneath the protective shell which can lead to cavities.
That’s why it’s imperative to have the right dental hygiene routine in place!
How Do I Prevent Cavities With Veneers?
The number one best preventative measure to avoid cavities is consistently cleaning your teeth of harmful microbes, plaque, and food particles that lead to decay and disease. This applies whether or not there’s a veneer in place! You can do that by:
- Regularly brushing and flossing. This removes cavity-causing buildup from your veneers and natural teeth alike. You should repeat this twice daily; once in the morning and again before bed at night.
- Avoiding abrasive products. Some commercial brand toothpaste has abrasive ingredients that can scratch the polished coating of your veneers. This leaves them more vulnerable to damage, which allows germs to penetrate your teeth. Instead, look for a gel formula which is often less harsh. If you have questions about which products are safe, ask your dentist!
- Rinsing with Fluoride mouthwash. This is effective at preventing decay while simultaneously strengthening your enamel. All your teeth, even those with veneers, will thank you!
- Keeping up with dental appointments. Only your dentist has the expertise and skills necessary to identify and treat a cavity. Schedule a visit every 6 months so that they’ll be able to catch your cavities before they evolve into anything worse.
If you do develop a cavity under your veneer, your dentist will need to remove it to mend your tooth, and then replace it with a new one. By caring for your teeth properly, you’ll increase the longevity of your veneers as well as avoid tooth decay!
